THE INSPIRATION
Just like many renowned interior designers, the incredible Architectural Digest magazine searches for inspiration in the country’s design icons… The question that everybody is thinking about it this: who marked the boundaries of the interior design industry in the country? These three design icons are the most influential masters of interior design industry of the 20th and 21st century, and their names should be known by everyone who is in love with this beautiful art.
Wendell Castle:
This American furniture designer and sculpture was an important figure in the countries design history. Recognized for his elegant and whimsical works, the furniture designer creations were made in bold color palettes and unique materials, including wood, fiberglass, and plastic. Born in 1956, Castle studied at the University of Kansas, earning his BFA in industrial design in 1958 and his MFA in sculpture in 1961.
Elsie de Wolfe:
Born in NYC in 1865, the interior designer was known as “America’s first decorator”. Even at a young age, de Wolfe had decisive ideas about design, and she resolved to make it her life’s mission to surround herself with inspiring interiors. It was after her famous decoration project of the Colony Club (the city’s first elite social club exclusive for women), the interior designer became the most popular decorator of her time!
Sister Parish:
The interior designer from 1960 was famous for her bold interior design projects where she seamlessly married together design elements (chintz, hooked rugs, quilted textures, and overstuffed armchairs) with her creative painted floors. She was the first practitioner brought in to decorate the Yellow Oval Room of the White House, a position soon occupied by French interior decorator Stéphane Boudin.
