Simple and Affordable Portland Home
By using the foundation and some of the walls of an existing house, architect Ben Waechter was able to save costs on this home for industrial designer Nick Oakley. A new second story adds 800 square feet of living space. Inexpensive black corrugated steel wraps around the exterior.
Cost-Effective Family Home in Pittsburgh
Andrew Moss and Michelle Yanefski built their 2,300-square-foot house in Pittsburgh for a little over $310,000. By using salvaged materials and doing much of the work themselves, they were able to keep costs down. Radiant-heat flooring was one of the few splurges.
Highly Flexible House Designed for a Musician on a Budget
This 1,250-square-foot home in Kansas City came in at around $235,000. Built by Kem Studio for musician Sarah Magill, the house is comprised of multi-functional spaces that can be easily converted into entertaining areas. Magill saved money on appliances and selected affordable Ikea cabinets.
An Affordable Modern Home in Atlanta
This simple house with a distinctive facade of red-painted, fiber-reinforced concrete panels, was built at only $150 per square foot. A simple materials palette and structural form helped keep costs low.
Affordable Prefab Prototype in Vietnam
Costing just under $4,000 to build, the S House prototype by Vo Trong Nghia Architects aims to provide affordable, durable shelter for Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, where homes often need to be rebuilt every few years. The design features a precast concrete frame that is finished with Nipa palm and cement board panels on site.
