David Lynch’s Enigmatic Installation

At Salone Del Mobile 2024

Designed as symbolic portals to the depths of the mind, Lynch’s installation beckons visitors into twin mirrored “thinking rooms” nestled within Pavilions 5 and 7. Here, amidst a landscape of cinematic projections and Lynchian motifs, guests are transported into a realm where introspection and imagination intertwine.

To uncover the secrets behind this captivating installation, Antonio Monda, the curator tasked with bringing Lynch’s vision to life, offers a glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship and artistic vision that define Lynch’s creative process in an interview with the Salone Del Mobile website.

Describing the installation, Monda paints a picture of twin chambers enveloped in a blue velvet curtain, reminiscent of Lynch’s iconic filmography, hinting directly at Blue Velvet and Twink Peaks and its infamous Red Room. At the heart of each room sits a monumental wooden armchair, adorned with brass tubes, inviting contemplation and reflection.

The genesis of the project stemmed from a fortuitous encounter between Monda and Lynch, with the Salone del Mobile seeking a filmmaker to craft a bespoke space. Monda’s recollection of finding Lynch’s passion for woodworking tied the knot, as it serves as a testament to the artist’s multifaceted talents and his unwavering commitment to his craft.

A Passion for Woodworking and Design

While Lynch’s cinematic oeuvre often delves into the depths of the subconscious, his lesser-known passion for woodworking and design adds a new dimension to his artistic repertoire. Monda highlights Lynch’s intuitive approach to creativity, where inanimate objects take on a life of their own, imbued with meaning and significance.

Yet, despite Lynch’s intricate designs, he entrusts the realization of his vision to the skilled artisans at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano. Here, the boundaries between art and craftsmanship blur, as Lynch’s ethereal concepts materialize into tangible form.

As visitors step into Lynch’s Thinking Rooms, they will be transported into a realm of introspection a. Monda draws parallels between Lynch’s installation and the director’s cinematic universe, where darkness and light coalesce to evoke a sense of unease and wonder.

Transceding Meditation

Amidst the pragmatic backdrop of the Salone del Mobile, Lynch’s installation surges as an artistic expression element, which invites dialogue and reflection through the power of interior design, in a latus sense, and space conceptualization. Monda emphasizes the universal themes of thought and meditation woven into Lynch’s creation, transcending the confines of design and aesthetics.

For Lynch, transcendental meditation plays a pivotal role in his creative process, yet his Thinking Rooms are not merely spaces for meditation, but realms for contemplation and exploration. As the installation unfolds, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in Lynch’s ethereal world, where reality intertwines with the subconscious, and every corner holds the promise of revelation.

We cannot wait to be a part of that experience.
